What if you hear “pfff”? What does it evoke?

„Reading the air” is an important capacity in social situations. It is the ability to accurately grasp the atmosphere during a conversation and understand what the other person is really trying to convey without explicitly mentioning it.

In digital times, communication tends to be stripped down to its literal meaning. Is the innate capacity of human beings to "read the air” and to respond accordingly obsolete?

There is a machine that speaks to us through air pumps, silicon-parts and motors, analog to the way lips and teeth change the flow of air. It only forms the sounds “p” and “f”.

What if you hear “pfff”? What does it evoke?





pfff has been exhibited in the central exhibition of the 48 Stunden Neukölln 2021 Festival in KINDL, Berlin.
